Spiderman: Ultimate Power Now Available for Legacy Devices

Posted by chen / Category:

There’s a new Spiderman movie coming out this week, and all sorts of video games are being released to help promote the film, which arrives in the US this Friday. While Xbox One and Android have some pretty awesome looking games that are available now, it seems as though BlackBerry is a little late to the game.  Not completely late, however, as Gameloft recently released Spider-Man: Ultimate Power for legacy BlackBerry devices.
Spider-Man: Ultimate Power is a classic runner game that has the Green Goblin, Sandman, and Venom team up and kidnap Mary Jane. It’s up to your friendly neighborhood Spiderman to run across the street and rooftops of New York and save the love of his life before it’s too late!
The game is free, and based on the description in BlackBerry World, it looks like it may have in app purchase. Head on over there to get the game and try it out yourself.

T-Mobile Giving BlackBerry Users $200 to Upgrade to a Samsung

Posted by chen / Category:

Screen-Shot-2014-04-11-at-20.00.10-660x321
The T-Mobile versus BlackBerry spat continues. Originally, T-Mobile targeted BlackBerry users with a promotion to switch to the iPhone 5S.
After back and forth between T-Mobile and BlackBerry CEOs, BlackBerry announced it was cutting ties with the magenta carrier.
T-Mobile is now targeting its BlackBerry customers again with a promotion to get them to switch to a Samsung. If you are due for an upgrade, T-Mobile will give BlackBerry customers $200 to upgrade towards a Galaxy Note 3, Galaxy S5 or Galaxy Light.
Though, emphasis on ‘due for an upgrade.’ Not just any BlackBerry customer can make the switch, you must be eligible for the upgrade. Nevertheless, should T-Mobile continue targeting its own customers with device switch promos?

BlackBerry 10.3 Render Shows Red Accents, Integrated Voice Control

Posted by chen / Category:

blackberry-103
BlackBerry 10.3 recently leaked, giving us a look at the upcoming iteration of BlackBerry 10. From the very early beta, we’ve seen BlackBerry is giving BB10 a flatter UI, red accents throughout the UI, and a few new features.
BlackBerry fans were torn between the red accents instead of BlackBerry 10′s classic cyan. Rumors claimed BlackBerry was simply testing the color swap, but swiftly returned to cyan.
Now, to add fuel to the fire, we’ve received what is claimed to be a press render of BlackBerry 10.3. You’ll notice the red accent is still present.
Additionally, the alleged press render shows an integrated Voice Control. We haven’t confirmed if the press render shows a revamped address book or if this is part of the new Personal Assistant feature coming to BlackBerry 10.3.
Nonetheless, it appears if you ask to search a contact it populates the results within the Voice Control, versus opening your contacts app and showing relevant results.
For now, take this with a grain of salt until we receive more confirmation from the source. But, let us know in the comments if you’d like the red accents in the UI instead of cyan.

symple-id
Richard Fox-Ivey let us know about his Waterloo-based start-up, Symple ID, that’s developing a BlackBerry 10 NFC-based solution that let’s you use your BlackBerry as the key to logging into websites on your laptop.
Symple ID needs some help from #TeamBlackBerry! They’re running a Kickstarter campaign right now to help fund the development effort. How will Symple ID work? Their Kickstarter says:
With Symple ID you get a personal NFC ID tag, the Symple ID app for your smartphone, the Symple ID browser extension to pair your laptop/desktop, and use of Symple ID’s secure login servers.

Key Features

  • Dead easy to use; just tap to sign-in
  • Secure; encrypts and stores your passwords securely on your phone; nothing is stored on our servers nor on your laptop/desktop
  • Helps protect you against a lost or stolen phone; your passwords are encrypted
  • Two-factor authentication protects your accounts; you need your phone + your NFC ID to login
  • Protects against phishing attacks by validating the site you are visiting before supplying your credentials
  • Compatible with Macs and Windows PCs

Using Symple ID

As you surf the web on your PC, Symple ID automatically detects logins. Whenever you fill-in a login on your PC Symple ID automatically sends them through a secure server to your smartphone and encrypts them using your unique NFC ID.
The next time you visit a stored site or application, Symple ID will prompt you to “tap to sign-in”.
symple-id-2
Symple ID looks to be a very unique and seamless way of securely managing your passwords online. If you’d like to see it come to BlackBerry 10, help Symple ID meet their funding threshold of $20,000 CAD.

BlackBerry Z3 Launching Next Week In Indonesia

Posted by chen / Category:

DSC06537_1
BlackBerry CEO John Chen has been a busy man since taking over the reigns at the company. He’s been traveling all over the world in an attempt to talk to different big time BlackBerry customers and share the company’s vision for the future. Next week, Chen will making a stop in Indonesia for the launch of the new BlackBerry Z3. This launch, which we had all been wondering when it would take place, was shared by Chen in an interview with TheRecord.
The Z3, the first device BlackBerry will release in 2014, will clue us in as to whether the company can successfully market and sell a low-end BlackBerry 10 smartphone in a targeted area – something that is key for its survival moving forward.
While Chen didn’t specify the exact day the Z3 will launch, we’re expecting BlackBerry to announce it sometime this week.
BlackBerry has also yet to confirm the Z3′s internal specs, which has definitely raised some red flags. While there is some evidence that it could sport a 720p display, we did see some alleged leaked specs before the device was even announced, which pointed to much more disappointing internals. Either way, the mystery remains for now, so hopefully that gets cleared up sooner rather than later as well.

BlackBerry Z3 Stacked Beside Z30 and Z10

Posted by chen / Category:

We’ve seen quite a bit of the BlackBerry Z3 already. Although, the Z3 hasn’t been seen too much in the wild.
That’s all changed with this recent photo surfacing, which shows the Z3 beside the Z30 and Limited Edition Z10.
You can now understand how the 5-inch Z3 looks compared to previous BlackBerry 10 all-touch smartphones. The Z3 is scheduled to release in the next few weeks and be sure to keep it locked to N4BB for further hands-on and review.

BBM Update Goes Live – Brings Stickers, Increased File Sharing Size, and More

Posted by chen / Category:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=Mi1LfK9eOhQBlackBerry has announced their latest update for BBM is officially rolling out today for all OSes. The update brings a few new additions like BBM Stickers with the BBM Shop, multi-person photo sharing, and an increase in the file transfer max size. The new BBM Shop, which will over time house different products for download and purchase is launching stickers packs. Each sticker pack contains between 20 and 25 stickers and features content developed by talented artists or relating to a theme or a character.
Examples of some stickers will most likely see are CosCat, Gilbert’s Tales or Bubble Bot, as well as sticker packs featuring content from popular brands including Shaun the Sheep and WWE. Sticker packs will either be free or $1.99 (or an approximate equivalent amount in local currency), and will be billed through each OS’ storefront.
BlackBerry has also partnered up with the WWE for a special WrestleMania 30 sticker pack which will be given away for free through BBM.
Screen Shot 2014-04-01 at 9.07.46 AM
In addition to the BBM Shop and stickers, this latest update also introduces multi-person photo sharing, and a big increase in the file transfer limitations that have annoyed BBM users for quite a while. Multi-person chats – not Groups – will be able to share pictures within the chat just as easily as if it was a one-on-one BBM conversation. You can also send files up to 16MB in size through BBM. The bump of 10MB was done in part to help people share even more content together through BBM instead of needing to rely on other services for large files.

BlackBerry Limited (NASDAQ:BBRY)(TSX:BB), a global leader in mobile communications, today announced an update of BBM(TM), a leading mobile messaging platform for private and secure communications, that allows customers to further personalize and enhance their chat experiences.
Available for download later today from the respective app stores for the Android(TM), BlackBerry(R) and iOS(R) platforms, BBM will now offer stickers – larger, bolder and more expressive images than emoticons – that BBM users can add to their BBM chats. Customers will be able to purchase and download sticker packs from the new BBM Shop found in BBM.
“Stickers are another great example of how we’re making the BBM experience more engaging and fun for our customers,” said David Proulx, Senior Director, BBM at BlackBerry. “Stickers let you personalize your chats and strike the right chord with people around the world who rely on stickers in chats when they connect with colleagues, family, friends, peers and partners.”
BBM customers will be able to download a variety of sticker packs right inside BBM from the BBM Shop. Each sticker pack contains between 20 and 25 stickers and features content developed by talented artists or relating to a theme or a character like CosCat, Gilbert’s Tales or Bubble Bot, as well as sticker packs featuring content from popular brands including Shaun the Sheep and WWE. To start, sticker packs will either be offered for free, or cost US $1.99, or an approximate equivalent amount in the local currency, and will be billed through the device’s app store.
With WrestleMania 30 just around the corner, WWE is planning to give away a free sticker pack to its fans through BBM. In addition, a free sticker pack created by BlackBerry featuring favorite BBM emoticons will be available to all BBM customers that download the new update. BlackBerry plans to add new sticker packs on a regular basis.
In addition to stickers, BBM customers can now easily share photos in multi-person chats(i). Photos will be delivered in the chat as a thumbnail that can be opened to reveal the image in full size. BBM customers can also now send higher quality photos, videos and presentations thanks to larger in-chat file transfers. Files up to 16MB can now be shared in a chat, an increase of 10MB.(ii)

Create a BBM Channel PIN Badge for Your Website

Posted by chen / Category:

Before Alex Kinsella left BlackBerry, while on the BBM team, he helped develop a widget for BBM Channels. This widget allows BBM Channel owners to create a Channel PIN badge to be used on a website or other medium that allows embedding HTML code. Today, Kinsella stated on his BBM Channel that the widget feature is now available.
To generate your BBM Channel PIN badge, follow these steps:
  1. Login to BBM Channels Manager at http://bbmc.es
  2. Select the Channel you want to create a PIN badge
  3. In top-right meta data you’ll see your name with a drop-down menu: select the widgets option
  4. Then click the ‘Create Channel PIN Badge’ text, which reveals a hidden menu
  5. Enter the required options and click ‘generate script’
You’ll then be provided a simple HTML code to be used and embedded on your own website. We have already gone ahead and installed our N4BB BBM Channel PIN badge across the site.

BlackBerry Kopi Shown Off In All Its Low-End Glory

Posted by chen / Category:

It’s like the BlackBerry Kopi really wants to be released, as it just keeps getting pictured over and over. This is not the first time we see the Kopi at all, but these pictures are some of the most clear we’ve had.
While the Kopi may or may not ever see the light of day, it’s cool to see the device out in the wild. I’m waiting for it to land on eBay though. I would pony up a little money for it, to be honest. Would you like to see this device out in the market, or is it better to just scrap it altogether and move on? Sound off below.

Calling All Designers – BBM Wants To Know Your Ideas For Stickers!

Posted by chen / Category:

BBM has pushed its latest update to their BlackBerry, iOS, and Android clients which has included the much anticipated Stickers! Now, there aren’t that many sticker packs available right off the bat. We know BlackBerry is planning on expanding the sticker submission process to artists out in the public, and today they’re taking the first steps to do so.
The @BBM Twitter account reached out today to any designers that may want to submit ideas for stickers, or may have questions regarding the new update. They provided this link which allows you to submit your info and ideas directly to the team.
The idea is that eventually they’ll open up the BBM Shop to any artist, and allow everyone to get their work in more easily. For now, this is a good controlled step forward.

Challenge Jungle Friends in Animal Battle for BlackBerry 10

Posted by chen / Category:

Sometimes it’s so hard finding a game that is truly original and fun to play. I can’t help but think that all the new ideas for game concepts are gone, and every new release is just a rehash of something that’s already out there, albeit with a few extra features to differentiate it from the rest of the pack. Animal Battle is one such game, and even though it is a healthy mixture of Tetris and Bejeweled, it has enough to set it apart and make it a game worthy of the space it takes up on your phone.
What is it?
As mentioned before, Animal Battle truly is a mixture of Tetris and Bejeweled: a puzzle game that involves rotating blocks of various colors to make matching sets all while making sure your playing field doesn’t fill up with said blocks. The schtick is that you pick a different member of the animal kingdom to represent you in the game battle it out against another creature of the wild.
The Good
Right off the bat, you’re greeted with bright colors, adorably animated animals, and catchy jungle music that doesn’t get tiresome.  It really leaves a great first impression. Your first step is to choose which game mode you would like to play. You can choose 1 or 2 player, with 1 player having a battle and tournament mode. More on those later.
After you pick how you want to play, you choose whom you would like to play as. There are about 15 animals you can choose from. I always choose Ninj the Turtle.
The gameplay itself is fairly easy, but at the same time difficult enough to keep you challenged. You tap the screen to rotate your two colored blocks, swipe left and right to change their position on the board, and swipe up to place them on the board. There are four different colored blocks that you continually stack on top of one another. Unlike most games of this kind, they don’t disappear after you match up three or more of the same color. It’s not until you place a matching block with a star inside of it that all the blocks disappear. There’s also a wild star block that will change into whatever color it touches and automatically destroy the blocks of the same color that are part of that chain.
If the game were just that, it would still be pretty fun. The extra mile is the fact that you are competing against another animal. The first player to have one of their blocks reach the bottom of the screen loses.
In single player mode, you can choose between battle and tournament. A battle is an individual challenge against an animal, while a tournament is a succession of fights against the full roster of animals. The puzzles get increasingly difficult after each victory.
In two player mode, half of the screen is flipped upside down, and you challenge a friend who is sitting in front of you and playing on the same screen.
The Bad
No game is complete without those little achievements to keep you coming back. Developers put them in there so you won’t get bored of the game after two days and end up deleting it. If you’ve got a long list of tasks to complete, you will feel compelled to open the game and play until you’ve conquered them all. There’s nothing inherently wrong with this technique, I just mentioning it in the bad portion of this review because I think it’s a gimmick that’s a little played out and needs to see some sort of improvement on the way it works.
I started playing the game at night, in my bed, lights off, before going to sleep. I didn’t realize that if you take too long to decide where you want to swipe your blocks, the voice of Satan chooses for you and screams “Auto Pilot” as he slams your blocks wherever they happen to be hovering at the moment. It was odd and unexpected to have a deep baritone voice randomly say “Auto pilot” while I was in the middle of a game with cast of creatures from the wild. It scared the loving mess out of me the first time, and I still constantly live in fear Satan letting me know he’s taking the game into his own hands at any time. It seriously makes me anxious and over eager to choose where I’m going to place my blocks. Maybe I’m just a pansy. Maybe I take too long to place my blocks. Maybe Satan shouldn’t be in this game. I’m not sure, but it’s definitely one of those.
I haven’t tried two player mode yet, but from what I can tell, I would imagine it’s better suited for a tablet. It must be hard to share a smartphone screen. I have a Z30, and I’m willing to bet four hands on my screen playing a game will be more than a bit challenging. It must be more so for a Q10 or Q5.
Download it?
The game costs $1.99 in BlackBerry World, and it professes, “Dollar to hour – this has to be one of your best investments.” While I wouldn’t put it that high on my list of personal investments, I would say that the game is fun, addicting, challenging, and keeps you coming back for more. I’m happy to recommend this game to anyone who wants to try a fresh mix on a game we all know and love. Plus the animation of the creatures is sure to be a kick with your children.

T-Mobile Offering $100 Off Any Device To Current BlackBerry Subscribers

Posted by chen / Category:

T-Mobile has egg on their face. After BlackBerry’s breakup with Magenta, T-Mobile CEO has been forced to come out and publicly try to save face. His latest attempt has come in a blog post “An Open Letter – and Offer – to BlackBerry Loyal.” CEO John Legere mentions how the company was “disappointed in BlackBerry’s decision this week to end their agreement with us,” but how at the end of the day, nothing changes for current T-Mobile subscribers (in terms of their service with the company).
Legere goes on to remind customers they can still bring their own device to the network, and enjoy the added benefits of what T-Mobile may offer. Legere also extends an offer to current BlackBerry customers:
“To show our appreciation for all current consumers so passionate and loyal to all things BlackBerry, we’re offering a $100 credit toward any new device, including the BlackBerry Q10 or the Z10.  And this offer is good through the end of the year. So you can take your time.”
While this may be a sincere attempt at keeping his current BlackBerry subscribers happy, one can’t help but think it’s another ploy to get more people off of the BlackBerry bandwagon. This is the second time T-Mobile offers BlackBerry users a sweet deal to upgrade, unfortunately for BlackBerry, that totally backfired, as around 94% of trade-ins opted to go with a phone from another manufacturer. Why was that the case?
Well, aside from the fact that many people may just have wanted to leave BlackBerry, T-Mobile didn’t have any BlackBerry 10 devices in store. If you wanted to trade in your old BB for a new one, you probably had to have it shipped to you. Let’s face it, no one wants that. This is specially true if you’ve never used or seen a BlackBerry 10 device in your life. Why in the world would you trade in for a device you’ve never used AND have to get it shipped?
Unfortunately, this is still the case with T-Mobile. They are going to have to sell off their existing stock of BlackBerry 10 devices, so yes you can get a Z10 and Q10 from them right now. Like stated previously though, you will have to wait to have it shipped to you though, as they won’t have any devices in store. Odds are this “pro-BlackBerry deal” will end up with a similar line as the one above.
That being said if you want to check it out, by all means, head on over to T-Mobile, and get yourself a $100 off a phone.

No BlackBerry Q20 Unveiling This Month

Posted by chen / Category:

BlackBerry is planning to launch the BlackBerry Q20 ‘Classic’ smartphone later this year. However, premier BlackBerry investor Prem Watsa attempted to persuade BlackBerry CEO John Chen to unveil the ‘Classic’ BlackBerry at Watsa’s Fairfax Financial annual meeting.
Discussing non-insurance investments and their booths at the meeting, Watsa says he “may even be able to convince John Chen to raffle a couple of BlackBerry Classics (the Q20).”
Fairfax Financial is hosting its annual meeting on April 9th, 2014 where we all had hoped to receive an early glimpse of the Q20. But, we’ve confirmed it will not be present at the meeting.
We will be attending the annual meeting and in regards to our inquiries about the Q20, Fairfax Financial said, “Looks like it will be released later, so not in time for our meeting.”
The BlackBerry Q20 will be the first BlackBerry 10 smartphone to reintroduce the ‘five button belt’ feature we grew accustom to on legacy devices. BlackBerry plans to have the Q20 release by the end of 2014.

Are You Liking BBM Stickers?

Posted by chen / Category:

BlackBerry has finally released the BBM update that brings a plethora of changes, including the stickers packs.
Each sticker pack contains between 20 and 25 stickers and features content developed by talented artists or relating to a theme or a character.
However, some sticker packs may not appear due to your location. Although, there is a small workaround to download the other sticker packs by clicking them and following the dialog to download.
